Trap Shooting
Trap shooting became a sport in 1793. At first live pigeon was used as moving targets and they were shot. The primitive trap shooting was like a replacement for pigeon or bird hunting. Around the American civil war fake birds were used in the place of live pigeons. However, in 1880’s clay discs or clay targets were introduced.
It is one of the three types of clay pigeon shooting the other two types being skeet shooting and sporting clays. Some of the variations include: double, Olympic, Nordic, Down-the-line trap shoot etc. Trap shooting rules are only slightly different for all of these variations. Skeet and trap shooting differs in the term that trap shooters are present at all the six stations. This is another area where skeet and trap shooting is different that in comparison to the eight skeet stations, the trap shooting stations are six in number. In skeet shooting one shooter completes his game and then the second shooter comes but in trap shooting six shooters shoot at one time. All six shooters are present at each of the six stations. When one shooter shoots from the first station he then moves to the second station and the shooter from the sixth station comes to the first station. Clay targets are shot continuously at random difficulty levels and hence, different shooters get different difficulty level targets. Women in trap shooting have been strong competitors but from 2008 and onwards this will no longer be an Olympic sport for women.
